(Urban Green Spaces)

As cities continue to grow, the importance of urban green spaces has received increasing attention. Parks, gardens, and other forms of vegetation can provide residents with places to relax and exercise, while also contributing to the environmental quality of urban areas.

One important benefit of green spaces is their potential effect on people’s physical and mental health. Regular access to parks may encourage people to walk or participate in outdoor activities. In addition, natural environments can provide a temporary escape from the noise and pressure associated with city life.

Green spaces can also influence the urban environment itself. Trees can provide shade during hot weather and may help reduce local temperatures. Vegetation can also absorb some rainwater, which may reduce the pressure placed on drainage systems during heavy rainfall.

However, creating and maintaining green spaces can be expensive, particularly in densely populated areas where land is limited. City governments must therefore consider how available land should be used. Some researchers argue that even small green areas can provide benefits if they are carefully designed and easily accessible to local residents.

The effectiveness of an urban green space may depend not only on its size but also on its location, design, and accessibility. A large park that is difficult to reach may be less useful to residents than a smaller park located within walking distance of a residential area.

City governments must consider ~
疑問文の語順(How should ~ be used?)

  • they は small green areas。are の補語が carefully designed と easily accessible の2つ

The effectiveness of an urban green space may depend not only on its size but also on its location, design, and accessibility. A large park that is difficult to reach may be less useful to residents than a smaller park located within walking distance of a residential area.

depend on ~/dɪˈpend/~しだいである
location/ləʊˈkeɪʃn/場所、立地

The effectiveness of an urban green space may depend not only on its size but also on its location, design, and accessibility.

The effectivenessS (of an urban green space) may dependV <not only on its size but also on its location, design, and accessibility>.

13文目

A large park that is difficult to reach may be less useful to residents than a smaller park located within walking distance of a residential area.

A large parkS (thatS′ isV′ difficultC′ to reach) may beV less usefulC <to residents> <than a smaller park (located within walking distance (of a residential area))>.

主語が長く、本当の V は may be
  • difficult to reach「たどり着くのが難しい」。
  • less useful ~ than …「…
  • (located within walking distance ~)は過去分詞のかたまりで a smaller park を説明。

  • 主語が長い:the importance (of urban green spaces)、A large park (that is difficult to reach) など。
  • 後ろから名詞を説明するかたまり:associated with ~、placed on ~、located within ~ などの過去分詞や、関係詞の where / that
